Saturday 20th September

After leisurely journeys to our destination we were met in 'Dunhirin' with a scrumptious lunch laid on by the advance party of Sue, Rob, Barbara and John.

The afternoon quickly disappeared in a round of golf and/or lazing and admiring the views. The weather even allowed for a spot of swimming.

As this was a Drinkwater bash, more food and drink was consumed at the supper bbq; which incidentally had been carefully nurtured into life by a slightly panicked John (i.e. he'd realised the gas actually had to be connected to the bbq for it to work).

Retired to bed. Tired and a little squiffy.

Sunday 21st September

Breakfast in Le Relais followed by a convoy, the likes of which South West France has never seen, to Chateau Masburel for wine tasting and talk on the history of the vineyard and their unique approach to viniculture.

Much tasting and less spitting later, we retired back to the Chateau for a quick lunch before a warm-up round of golf and some beauty treatments for the ladies.

Gala Dinner Night! Everyone looked stunning.

Five toasts, an extraordinary speech, lashings of rich food and wine, and a dodgy rendition of 'Happy Birthday to You' later, we retired to bed. Tired and a little bit squiffy.

The text of Rob's speech

Mes Chers Amis,

Or in the Queen's English if your O-Level/GSCE French doesn't stand you in good stead:

My dear friends,

As some of you may know, and as it will become obviously clear, I have been learning French. Not very well, but I am trying...

So tonight I would like to welcome you all to my birthday celebration. Thank you all for coming and having a nice time.

Please do not respond to me in French because I probably will not understand you.

I love you all. Up the Arsenal.

Ed note: I am not sure what translation service Pa used but they should be fired immediately. As should his French teacher, the distractingly pretty Helene.

Monday 22nd September (Rob's actual birthday)

Another breakfast in Le Relais, this time a little quicker as excitement mounted as the tee off times for the Kougar Cup grew near. Local members joined the crew as they headed round the course in beautiful sunshine.

The non-golfing womenfolk (including Jeff) were left to swim and contain small children in some semblance of order.

The evening saw a nail biting Putting Competition playoff between Jon and Gordon, followed by the Prizegiving for the very tasteful trophies. Topped off by dinner at Le Chai Brasserie, we retired to bed. Tired and a little bit squiffy.

Tuesday 23rd September

Departures throughout the morning with the last stragglers leaving, clutching their well-earned trophies at around midday.

Journeys back of varying lengths followed by early bedtimes if the Drinkwater lot were anything to go by....

Thank you and goodnight.

We did put socks on him before putting him in the hold, honest.
